The Milwaukee Symposia for Church Composers
The Office for Worship of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is proud to make available the "Milwaukee Statement" on our Web site. This Statement is as important today as the day it was released in 1992. Our hope is that it will be used for further study, dialogue and discourse on the quality of liturgical music.
This report is the fruit of a ten-year dialogue among the participants in the Milwaukee Symposia (1982-1992). The idea for such symposia came from Sister Theophane Hytrek, SSSF, of blessed memory. Spiritual and financial support for the project had been provided by Archbishop Rembert Weakland, OSB, currently retired Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
Over the years 1990-1992 this statement was conceived and written, evaluated and edited. It is a report on the symposia's years of observation, study, reflection and dialogue concerning the nature and quality of liturgical music in the United States, especially within the Roman Catholic tradition.
